Role
Boston traded outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia to Pittsburgh for Oviedo last December. Oviedo threw one game for the Red Sox, 3 2/3 innings in relief at Houston on March 30, allowing four runs. He then went on the IL with a right flexor strain and didn't pitch for Boston again. He made a rehab start for Worcester on Sept. 17 (per MLB.com). For 2027 he's one of several starters coming back from injury who are competing for spots behind the top of the rotation.
Outlook
The track record is thin. He missed all of 2024 after Tommy John surgery and made nine starts for the Pirates in 2025 with a 3.57 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings. His one big-league full season was 2023: 32 starts, a 4.31 ERA, and 83 walks. He averaged 95.5 mph on the four-seamer in 2025 and 93.0 in his lone 2026 outing (Baseball Savant). Ian Browne of MLB.com lists him as arbitration-eligible and thinks the club wants to see what it has after paying a real prospect for him.
Our take: two elbow injuries in three years and that walk rate add up to a swingman. We'd give him a spring look as a starter. We'd also bet he's pitching the middle innings by June.
